What is the Humanatee Project?
A nonprofit dedicated to planting millions of acres of seagrass and creating manatee sanctuaries. Seagrass is a miraculous plant that absorbs 35% MORE CO2 than rainforest per acre! In fact, it was the first plant on planet earth and helped PH balance the oceans as well as create our atmosphere.
Why is it necessary?
Humans are indisputably impacting climate change through pollution and even well intentioned activities. We need a better way to absorb excess CO2, one of the "greenhouse" gasses.
Who runs the Humanatee Project?
We are run by our members in a structure known as a DAO - a decentralized autonomous organization run in democratic fashion, like a co-op or other collective, which lives on the blockchain for efficiency and transparency - made up of a group of problem solvers that care deeply for our planet and our fellow humans. By working to bring people together to heal the planet without blame or shame we can truly unite and find balance as a people.
How does it work?
Seagrass absorbs 35% more C02 per acre than rainforests!!! We can't plant rainforest, but we CAN plant seagrass! By planting it at scale, we have a chance to stabilize our environment and live in harmony with nature. Once planted, it's only natural to introduce manatees, as it is their favorite food and they help to naturally spread seedlings and help cultivate healthy seagrass beds.
Are you really going to eat Manatees?!
Not any time soon, but someday, if we do our jobs well enough and restore the manatee population, we can!
Do they taste good?!
You bet! In fact, they were hunted to near extinction because they are so delicious. Their close relative, the sea cow, wasn't so lucky...it was so irresistibly scrumptious we literally ate them all!
